States With No Sales Tax

Five US states levy no statewide sales tax — Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon. But only four of them are truly 0% for shoppers: Alaska lets local governments charge their own sales tax, so its average combined rate is 1.82%.

Alaska is the exception

Alaska has no statewide sales tax, but — unlike the other four — it allows local governments to levy sales taxes of their own. That is why Alaska's average combined rate is 1.82% rather than 0%, and why the rate in one Alaskan town can be very different from the rate in the next: local rates there run as high as 7.85%. If you are buying in Alaska, use the exact local rate for that town, not the state average — our calculator's custom-rate option takes any rate you type in.

Buying in a no-tax state does not always mean no tax

Two things catch shoppers out. First, most states tax a sale based on where the buyer receives the goods (destination sourcing), so ordering online from a seller in a no-tax state does not by itself remove the tax — the seller will usually collect your own state's rate on delivery. Second, when a seller does not collect your state's tax, most states impose a matching use tax on the buyer instead. Our plain-English guide explains both rules in more detail.

How to use this with the calculators

In Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire or Oregon, a purchase has no sales tax to add — a $100 item costs $100 before any other charges. In Alaska, run the price through the sales tax calculator with the local rate for the town, or check a receipt total with the reverse calculator. For every other state, see the full rates-by-state table.

This calculator uses each state's average combined state and local sales tax rate, but the exact rate depends on the city, county and special districts where a sale takes place, and rates change over time. Some items (such as many groceries and prescription medicines) are taxed differently or exempt in some states. This site provides general information only and is not tax, financial or legal advice. For an exact figure, check the rate with the relevant state or local tax authority.
