How sales tax is calculated

The formula is simple: tax = price × rate, and total = price + tax. A $100 purchase at an 8.25% rate adds $8.25 of tax, for a $108.25 total. The tricky part in the US is knowing which rate applies — there is no single national sales tax. Forty-five states charge a statewide tax, and thousands of counties, cities and special districts add their own on top.

That is why this site uses each state’s average combined rate: the state rate plus a population-weighted average of its local rates, published by the Tax Foundation. It is the fairest single estimate for a state — but for an exact figure on a specific purchase, use the custom rate option with the rate for the exact location, or check our guide to how US sales tax works.

Frequently asked questions

Multiply the price before tax by the sales tax rate (as a decimal), then add it back. Example: a $100 item in a place with an 8.25% rate has $8.25 of tax, for a total of $108.25. This calculator does that maths for you using each state's average combined rate — or a custom rate you type in.
