The formula

Sales tax = price before tax × tax rate. Then total = price + tax. Worked example: a $250 purchase in Texas (average combined rate 8.20%) has 250 × 0.082 = $20.50 of tax, so the total is $270.50.

A worked example for every step

Say you are buying a laptop priced at $899 in Florida. Florida’s state rate is 6.00% and its average local rate is 0.98%, an average combined rate of 6.98%. Tax = $899 × 6.98% = $62.75, so you would pay about $961.75 in total. In parts of Florida with no county surtax the rate is exactly 6.00% ($53.94 of tax); in counties with a 2.00% surtax it reaches 8.00% ($71.92). That gap is why location matters, and why we label our figure an average.

Frequently asked questions

Multiply the price before tax by the sales tax rate (as a decimal), then add it back. Example: a $100 item in a place with an 8.25% rate has $8.25 of tax, for a total of $108.25. This calculator does that maths for you using each state's average combined rate — or a custom rate you type in.
